Not only is this a fitting name for a drill, as it doesn’t appear we have many sunny days left in the golf season, “Sun Up and Out” is a great drill to help with the correct technique for hitting pitch shots.
To help hit softer pitch shots with more backspin, we have to understand the position of the clubface in our backswing as well as post impact/through position. For this drill, put some tape on the face of your wedge and draw an image of the Sun on the tape. When you take the club back, make sure the Sun on the face is always pointing to the sky; this will force you to cup your wrist and keep the clubface more open and outside your hands on the backswing. On the downswing and through swing, always feel like you keep the Sun pointing to the sky. This will help you develop proper technique for higher and softer pitch shots.
So remember, think about the “Sun” pointed up to help you hit better pitch shots but also maybe to help you stay warm during the Fall…
Have Fun, Matt Truong
