We all know your short irons are your scoring clubs! It is really important to hit these clubs close. With short irons, we really need to hit down and have interaction with the turf after the ball, and the reason you do that is that you have the pinch the ball so it comes out on a boring trajectory with good spin.
So here is a tip to you can try on the range that will help your short iron game; simply lay a towel down flat horizontally, and then put a golf ball down about an iron club head away in front of the towel. Now set up to the ball, and make a swing. The whole idea and goal is to miss the towel as you swing. If you release the club early, what’s going to happen is you are going to hit the towel before the ball. What I like about this drill is the immediate feedback provided by the towel, so we can try to get those hands forward and make that good compression on the golf ball.
Let us all hit our short irons close this year!
Have fun, Matt Truong
