Certainly the best opportunity to have a good downswing and ultimately a great shot is to find the correct position at the top of the backswing. We know that we should direct the hands to a comfortable position straight out from the trail shoulder and feel coiled but what about a simple thought for the shoulders, arms and wrists to get to the optimum position at the top? Well, we would like to turn or rotate the shoulders 90 degrees getting our back to the target while hinging the wrists a full 90 degrees (measured from the shaft to the target arm radial bone), and all the while keeping full extension in the target arm maximizing the width of the swing by trying hard to keep the hinging at wrists and not the elbow. We can allow the arms to swing up to shoulder height or a little above but we do not want to deviate from the formula above to optimize our backswing position. So while trying to find the perfect position at the top of the backswing just remind yourself of ’90-90-Straight’… turn your shoulders 90 degrees, hinge your wrists 90 degrees and for Pete’s sake keep your target arm straight.
